What is tai chi?
Tai chi, pronounced tie-chee (also known as taijichuan) is a set of gentle, relaxing exercises that can help people of all ages in profound ways. It was originally practiced in ancient China as a martial art but today it is used primarily for its legendary health and longevity benefits.
What is qigong?
Qigong, pronounced chee-gong, is a set of ancient Chinese exercises combining slow breathing and movement. Tai chi is a part of qigong.
Do I need special clothing or equipment?
No, tai chi/qigong can be done wearing normal clothing and needs no special equipment. It is a low-impact aerobic exercise that can be easily performed in small spaces.
What will I learn?
Participants will learn balance skills, good body alignment, and coordinated tai chi movements as well as breathing techniques that help achieve better health, diminish stress, and achieve a calmer state.
Who can benefit from doing tai chi?
Everyone can benefit from tai chi, even people confined to a chair can benefit from the breathing exercises in tai chi and qigong exercises.
How often will I need to practice?
In a perfect world we would all practice every day, but just 30 minutes twice a week can have a tremendous positive effect. Our classes are designed to teach people a skill set they can then take home and use every day to become healthier.
How will tai chi/qigong improve my health?
Tai chi reduces stress, relieves pain, and improves sleep. It will also improve your balance, strength, flexibility, and mobility, making your daily activities easier. It is an easy way to start losing weight. Regular practice of tai chi will boost your mood, mental clarity, and self-esteem.
